Rescue packs for the first 580 Peruvian Amazonians ready to go!

This has been a truly crazy week. When I begun this journey with the fundraiser I never imagined it would be so challenging but so incredibly thrilling. This week has involved buying 2 tonnes of rice from local farmers, bulk buying 3 tonnes more of food and sanitary items and packing every single kilo ourselves! Back-breaking and exhausting but myself and my wonderful friend volunteers laughed a lot, sang a lot and of course always thinking excitedly about the moment when the people in need receive their packs. The level of detail involved in coordinating this was dizzying - don't forget the plastic bags, don't forget the lunch for the volunteers, extra bags for inside the sacks as the sacks are going by boat and we can't risk them getting wet, contingencies - a lot of those! There was a punctured tire whilst in the middle of nowhere sourcing local rice...but if everything happens as we expect, the story just isn't as much fun to tell! The multi-institutional effort has been amazing, the sub-mininstry of the Ministry of the Environment the National Service for Protected Areas have helped me to find the communities with the most need, source boats, coordinate with very desperate people that are very very far away by the Protected Area as you can see in the maps on the Peru tab of the website, and ferry me around to get the heavy things we need. The regional office of the Ministry of agriculture helped me source and collect the rice, the university I work at has helped with so many little and crucial things. I have met the commander of the Navy and well the feeling of appreciation and support I am getting from people here has been truly humbling. They always talk about how kind you donors are, to care so much for people you don't know enough to give them some of your money. Very good vibes! We have had to figure out how to coordinate a pick up point with people without phones, and source a boat big enough but cheap enough to carry our massive load. We are hoping to set out in 2 days. I am making a video diary of all this to share with you soon. But in the mean time, here are a few pictures and videos...
